Leaders Eat Last

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ
“And those who believe and do righteous good deeds, they are dwellers of paradise, they will dwell therein forever” [2:83]

Br. Yaqub Khan exemplifies the essence of a resilient soldier, sincere leader and dedicated community member. A successful and established businessman, lead of Imam Azeez’s former halaqa (the TRIBE), Chairman of Tarbiya Institute’s Board of Directors - Br. Yaqub has led several impactful projects at Tarbiya Institute and within the local community.

Most community members did not meet Br. Yaqub through one of his titles. Instead - they met Br. Yaqub in situations where he left his self interest for the gain of a greater good. A pat on a child's head, offering a helping hand, shifting parking cones to ensure safe traffic, organizing & cleaning storage rooms, noticing and donating items he sees the masjid needs, and so much more - all with a humble smile - truly exemplifying the character of the Prophet ﷺ.

“Leaders are the ones who are willing to give up something of their own for us. Their time, their energy, their money, maybe even the food off their plate. When it matters, leaders choose to eat last”

Two years in a row, Br. Yaqub served as the lead volunteer for the intensive Ramadan program at Tarbiya House Roseville, overcoming countless challenges stemming from the pandemic. The second year Br. Yaqub led the Ramadan program, every single volunteer from the year prior returned to serve under his leadership. He took responsibility to ensure that all the members and volunteers on his team, new or returning, had direction, his support and most importantly - clarity on the purpose behind why they did what they did, establishing clear niyah

This is how the community sees Br. Yaqub. It is not his words that inspire volunteers, youth, his family and his friends to serve beside him - rather his character, actions, kindness and ikhlas that speak louder than any words ever could. The first one to arrive to set up Iftar, the last to eat, and the last to leave, Br. Yaqub is the first to create solutions and address arising issues, the first to smile and warmly welcome you with his entire family - he has set an example to bring the community together and be inspired to walk in his footsteps. Ramadan is only one testimony to his dedication to our beautiful and growing community.

Br. Yaqub has quickly become a resilient companion of Tarbiya House Roseville, the backbone of the Ramadan program, a leader whose intention and work has always been tied to the sake of our Creator, a leader who commands others for the greater good and one that is devoted to witness the success of every program he is involved in and every person he crosses paths with at Tarbiya.

Please keep Br. Yaqub and his family in your most sincere dua - May Allah swt continue to bless Br. Yaqub and his family with His grace and mercy. May they always be under Allah's watchful eyes, May he have many more years of leadership and inspiration to come.
