Nisab is the exemption limit for the payment of Zakah. If a Muslim’s net yearly savings falls below this amount, he or she is exempt from paying Zakah. Only those whose net capital exceeds the nisab value are obliged to give Zakah. The nisab amount is calculated based on the market value of 85 grams of 24-karat gold.
Keep in mind that in addition to cash, Zakah is also owed on gold, silver, investments, rent income, business merchandise, and profits, shares, and bonds if they are saved in accounts for over one “Hawl” or one Hijri year. Any of these must be taken into account when determining the Zakah amount.
