We are inundated with Christmas lights, images of ornate trees and scenes of children lining up to make requests from Santa. This often comes with questions from the Muslim community. Is it halal to participate? Should we offer holiday greetings? Can I watch Christmas movies? Isn’t it weird if we separate ourselves from the festivities which seem harmless? These questions have been answered again and again, but there is a deeper issue that we as Muslims should be more concerned with, if we weren’t so distracted by the shiny lights and fancy decor. What does participation in such activities and celebrations say about our relationship with Prophet Issa (pbuh), the figure who is supposedly at the center of all of this?
